Desert Palms Church History
Desert Palms Church, PCA can trace its lineage back to the year 1988 when a group of reformed believers began meeting at Anderson Elementary School in Chandler, Arizona. This church - called South Valley, PCA - was particularized in October 1990, and met at the Chandler Seventh Day Adventist Church until the fall of 1994, when the church changed its name to Desert Palms Church, PCA. A new pastor was named, the Reverend Dave Bennett, and the church moved its place of worship to Bogle Junior High School in Chandler.
In August 2000, Desert Palms Church, PCA purchased 10 acres of land, one quarter mile south of the intersection of Arizona Avenue and Ocotillo Road in Chandler - an area zoned light industrial. A Building Committee was formed in 2002 to begin the long process of selecting an architect, finding a construction firm, getting plans approved and acquiring permits. It was decided that a building resembling an old Spanish mission church would be well suited to the extreme hot weather of Arizona, and an architect, Steve Barduson, was consulted. After much prayer and many hours of work by the Committee, the building was ready to be built in the Fall of 2005.
After the resignation of Pastor Bennett in October 2005, Desert Palms Church, PCA formed a pastoral search committee in January of 2006, and in August the same year, the Church called the Reverend Kelley Hand to be Senior Pastor. Construction began on the new building the same month and was completed in December 2006 when the first worship service was held the week before Christmas, on December 17th. A dedication service for the building was held on January 14, 2007 with many of our old members, as well as new, in attendance. The grounds have been beautifully landscaped with palm trees and other desert plantings with a welcoming patio area and fountain in the middle of a courtyard. This is where we enjoy congregational get-togethers including candlelight on Christmas Eve and Easter sunrise breakfast after our early Easter morning sunrise service. |
